Derek Derenalagi was serving with the Worcestershire Sherwood Foresters Regiment in Helmand Province in July 2007 when the vehicle he was out on patrol in triggered a roadside bomb.
A huge explosion hurled Derek 30 yards through the air, where he landed on rocks. Evacuated back to Camp Bastion, he was pronounced dead and medical staff were preparing to put him in a body bag until one of them detected a faint pulse.
Nine days later, Derek awoke from a coma to see his wife Ana by his bedside. She had some tough news to tell him.
Too distraught, Ana simply couldn’t find the words.
So, she took a picture and showed Derek that both his legs had been amputated.
Despite the devastating loss of both his legs, Derek refused to let his disability get in the way of what he could achieve.
The support I received from Help for Heroes was massive, not only for me but for my family. I cannot thank the Charity enough for the amount they’ve done.”

By giving a monthly gift we can continue to provide recovery and support for our Heroes.
Case Managers: Applying for disability benefits, helping with medical appointments, accessing mental health support… our case managers work with veterans and their families to help them feel in control of their lives.
Hidden Wounds Service: Our team of mental health professionals work with both veterans and their families, supporting people to overcome trauma, depression and any mental health challenges that stem from life both in and after service.
Recovery College: Our Recovery College provides free courses to help veterans manage their physical and mental health and wellbeing – from pain and depression to nutrition and financial support.
Sport, Activity and Fellowship: Hiking, wheelchair rugby, choir singing, cooking – or just meeting up for a chat and a cuppa, our sports and activity clubs are a great way for veterans and their families to reconnect and build new friendships.

Help for Heroes funded the legs that I used at the Paralympics and have made a lot of difference to my sport as an athlete. It’s a fantastic charity, I’m just thankful.”

Of course! We are incredibly grateful for any amount you feel able to give.
Because of donation processing fees, we do ask that if you would like to donate less than £1 per month you consider making a slightly higher one-off donation. This ensures that as much of your donation can be used supporting those affected by their service.
We understand that circumstances change – you are free to alter the amount or frequency of your regular donation at any time or stop it completely. If you call our team on 0300 303 9888 - Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm. Calls to this number are charged at your standard network rate, and we can arrange that for you
If you subsequently feel able to give again, we would, of course, love to welcome you back.
We all make promises. At Help for Heroes we’ve promised all those affected by their service that we will support them, for life.
Now, we’re asking our supporters, like you, to echo this promise – to Make the Heroes Promise.
The Heroes Promise asks supporters, new and old, to commit to making a monthly donation. This reliable and predictable income allows us to plan for the future – fulfilling our promise for as long as we’re needed.
